If you feel as though you no longer need a Representative Payee SSA.gov suggests the following:
In order to become your own payee, you must show SSA that you are now mentally and physically able to handle your money yourself. You could provide:
- A doctor’s statement that there has been a change in your condition and that the doctor believes you are able to care for yourself; or
- An official copy of a court order saying that the court believes that you can take care of yourself; or
- Other evidence that shows your ability to take care of yourself.
Note: Be advised that if SSA believes your condition has improved to the point that you no longer need a payee, we may reevaluate your eligibility for benefits.
However, in my experience if your Representative Payee is an approved organization then your chances to be become your own payee are slim to none. The main reason being, that SSA has likely already done extensive screening due to the fact that they will only allow an organization to be a Payee Representative as a last resort. Most of these Organizational Payee Representatives charge a fee ranging anywhere from 25 dollars a month at some organizations here in Dayton up to 75 dollars a month in some larger cities such as Cleveland and Columbus.
Therefore, the best option in many cases for a person unhappy with their current Organizational Payee Representative is to simply request that the Representative be changed from to an Organization with lower fees or a family or church member that will agree to apply as a representive. All of this can be handled through your local Social Security Administration Office without the aid of an attorney.
I no longer wish to be the representative payee for my brother. I would like to assign this responsibility to an Organization. Is there a providers list of organizations that I could contact.
Thank you
Early March, 2011, I was rushed to a hospital (due to Lithium Toxicity… POISONING). That happened — entirely — because I followed my V. A. psychiatrist’s orders, precisely… NOT because I took my “meds” in an irresponsible manner.
My brother — who trained as an Army medic/ “psych” and E. E. G. “tech” — was told, by an attending physician — that I suffered from a swollen brain and that I might “be in a vegitative state, for life!”
Subsequently, I ended up in an Assited Care Home (Sacramento County); for the first week (starting “The Ides of March,” 21011, my head (figuratively) was “in a fog.”
Starting the 2nd week, my mind was as clear as it’s ever been (I’m a, university-graduate Mensan — a member of the international High I. Q. Society.
Because I had neuropathy (nerve damage), I had a difficult time walking even a short distance… with a walker; a year later (it’s, now, the end of June, 2012), I can STRIDE (POWER Walk) — UNassisted, 2-3 miles at a time.
The administratrix of that assisted-care home gave — in writing — glowing accolades
I saw a V. A. psychiatrist (Mather, CA) for 4 years; he was instrumental in my obtaining a “representative” [SIC/ sick!]-payee… partly due to my (at that time!) not-responsibly handling my finances [ironic, since I have a B. A. in, Financial Management/ worked in that field (3 organizations) for 23 years]!
My Mensa (high I. Q.) mind was subverted my my Manic (Bipolar) one; since then, I’ve taken my “meds,” as prescribed/ spent much, needed, time in Therapy!
Because of Lithium TOXICITY (even though I followed my physician’s orders, precisely) [it was NOT due to my ingesting those “meds,” irresponsibly!], I was hospitalized, then, spent more than a year in an assisted-care home. Its administratrix
— when I moved to the Veterans Home of Calif. (Yountville) — gave me a glowing review: She exclaimed that I can take care of myself… as did the referenced doctor, in his medical assesment to that “vet’s” complex.
Because my, so-called, “representative” payee (“Life”) is holding onto hundreds (more likely, thousands of dollars of MY Soc. Sec. funds — and won’t communicate, with me — I NEED to terminate that relationship.
So far, my efforfts have been thwarted!?
Also, I cringe that Social Security might have “Life” retrun MY “surplus” money, to THEM (S. S.)
My war with Social Security started with a payee accounting form from two years ago! Excuse me, but they did get from me material in which they requested. My sentiments is negligence or fraud on their part. what nerve do they have in requesting an item in which was sent to them during said time period, but turn around two years later and said they never got it and want it.
They had 14 years.
on the payee agencies they make the beneficiary sign a form agree to whatever. Which if that happens to me when my mother dies, I may not sign it. You can also move out of the area where there a no payee agencies. Then they would have to give it directly to you. Also, if people feel the organization is not giving you enough to live on for food, clothing, extra bills you can call Social Security and complain. My mother thinks that payee is stupid with today’s technology. Most beneficiaries can handle debit cards and cash. They sometime have problems with checking accounts. I personally believe that having a payee, violates my freedom of choice. It could also be unconstitutional (I watch a lot CSPAN) I should be able to mess up like anyone else. I have messed up but not to bad. I buy extra item at grocery store, when I shouldn’t.
I no longer wish to be the payee for my sister. at this time i’m having hard time and I do not have the time to be her payee.i will be moving out of town.I’m looking for and organization that can take over as the payee is there a organization or a list.

My brother is my Payee. When I went in front of the Judge 4Years ago. A lot of information did not reach the court. It was the Lawyers mishandling of the case. For example: I belong to a methadone clinic for the past 10 years I been clean get drug tested every 2 weeks. also I go to a counselor once a month. This Lawyers withheld this information!
I have recently gotten my SSI/SSDI. We chose to have the funds loaded onto the Check card they provide. When the cards came, they had on for me with only my name on it and the other one had my payee’s and my name on it. They put the funds on the card that had my payee’s name on it but not on mine, Why did they do it that way. Thank you
My older sister thinks “she” gets to be my payee when my mother passes… What do I do.
